The Saskatoon Police Service has released a survey it says shows that residents are becoming more satisfied with police.
The study was done last year by the research group Insightrix.
It says overall satisfaction with the police service is 91.8% — that includes people who are either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied.
The numbers are almost as high within the Aboriginal community.
According to the police service, the overall satisfaction rate sits at 89% for First Nations and Metis people — up from the 80% rate in 2008, and the 59% rate recorded in 2005.
Weighill says the numbers are a noticeable improvement from six years ago.
“Well I think the numbers were low in 2005; we had just come through, within a year or so, of the (Neil) Stonechild inquiry. Crime itself was quite high here in Saskatoon so I think that’s part of it. We’ve worked hard on our relationships with First Nations and the Aboriginal community in Saskatoon.”
Meanwhile, some of the top concerns listed by city residents include vandalism, gangs, drugs and speeding.
The aboriginal portion of the survey included 101 residents who told researchers over the phone that they were aboriginal.
