A Liberal MP says she worries too many evidence-based agencies that specialize in Aboriginal health are getting the axe from the federal government.

Dr. Carolyn Bennet says she has noticed that groups that specialize in breaking down information for disease prevention and health promotion have seen their budgets cuts.

The Native Women’s Association of Canada’s health unit and the National Aboriginal Health Organization are just a few of the groups that have been impacted in recent weeks.

Bennet says she thinks the current federal government doesn’t like agencies that provide information which counters their political beliefs.

“The federal government has always had a responsibility in health research.  I mean, they seem to be wanting to get out of that, too.  One of the other ways that we’ve looked at this is that the research rarely proves the ideology — it tends to prove that the path this government is on doesn’t work.”

Federal officials have not been available for comment.
