A special ceremony is being held today at the Montreal Lake Cree Nation to remember a community member killed a year ago.

On April 3rd, 2011, the body of 49-year-old John Moses Bird was found on a road on the reserve.

Investigators believe Bird was hit by a vehicle and the driver took off.

The band’s vice-chief, Richie Bird, says the band is unveiling a memorial in the victim’s honour.

“It hasn’t been solved.  We’re not looking for revenge, or whatever.  (He) was a father, he was a grandfather, he was a friend in the community, played hockey, played ball . . . a real nice guy.”

RCMP are still investigating the death, but no one has been arrested.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police or Crime Stoppers.
