A director with Saskatchewan Parks says measures exist to safeguard any sacred First Nations sites within provincial parks.
The FSIN recently stated it had concerns about two new proposed provincial parks.
Vice Chief Bobby Cameron says the province has to make sure it educates itself about the presence of any First Nations ceremonial or burial sites before development occurs.
Jeanette Hamilton heads up the province’s cultural resource management branch.
She says there are a number of things they can do:
“And it’s about trying to find the right combination for each site. It could be if we know about a location, that there’s no access. If it’s a really significant, sensitive site that really can’t withstand any public access, we’ll have that area closed.”
As well, Hamilton says parks can keep track of where any burial sites may be so future development doesn’t occur there.
She encourages any First Nations residents who know where any sacred sites may be in provincial parks to give them a call.
