Officials with the Department of Aboriginal Affairs are considering removing newly re-elected Red Pheasant Chief Stewart Baptiste from office.

Court officials confirm that, earlier this week, Baptiste was arrested for three alleged breaches of probation and two tickets — just after he won re-election.

Baptiste also faces a driving-while-disqualified charge.

He was released on bail after appearing in court and will be back in court next month.

This fall, Baptiste is scheduled to stand trial for impaired driving charges.

Department spokesman Trevor Sutter notes Baptiste has already been convicted of at least one offence, and he is also going through the courts on other charges.

He says if convicted of an indictable offence, Baptiste could be removed from office.

According to Sutter, Aboriginal Affairs officials have held preliminary discussions about that possibility, but they want to do more research.

“We continue to monitor the situation, and we also have advice from Department of Justice lawyers who, when we bring some incident to their attention, they check into it for us.”

He adds the government doesn’t have to wait for a band member to complain to begin that removal process.
