A man running for the federal NDP leadership says he would like to borrow a few themes from his home province of Quebec to improve the lives of First Nations people in the country.

Thomas Mulcair is currently making the rounds through Saskatchewan as part of his attempt to replace Jack Layton as leader of the party.

Mulcair says all provinces deal with First Nations issues using a variety of different methods, but he prefers the Quebec methodology:

“I honestly believe that the way we’ve gone at it in Quebec, in many regards, has been very positive.  Nation-to-nation is the right way to go, and I think that’s the way of the future.  If we start dealing on that level, and we put the proper resources and make them available, then we’ll be able to solve some of these lingering problems.”

He feels land claims is one particularly troublesome issue that needs to be revitalized.

Mulcair thinks First Nations issues will get addressed more often when more First Nations MPs are elected.
