Five youth from northern Saskatchewan are being honoured for their efforts to protect the environment.

Shayna Paul and Geron Paul of the English River First Nation, Reuben Maurice of Beauval, Melissa Favel of Ile a la Crosse and River Cote of Saskatoon have all won Global Citizen Awards.

The honours are bestowed by the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation and will be handed out in Saskatoon on February 4th.

Candyce Paul is the mother of Shayna and Geron.

Paul says they were selected after taking part in a march last year against a potential nuclear waste storage facility in northern Saskatchewan.

She notes her son didn’t do a lot of public speaking before now.

Paul adds a letter of his on the issue was also published in two Saskatchewan newspapers.
