Stranded residents of Stanley Mission are now able to head back home in their vehicles.

About 100 people from the community have been staying in Prince Albert and La Ronge since Sunday’s washout on the only road into the community.

Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson says both lanes of the rebuilt road were re-opened at around 1:50 this afternoon.

Initially, crews were planning to open only one lane of Highway 915 by 3:00 p.m. today, and then have both lanes open to traffic three hours later  — but Cook-Searson says the repair work today went quicker than expected.

Meanwhile, she says doctors were flown to Stanley Mission earlier this week and some people needing medical procedures were airlifted out.
