The RCMP’s Historical Case Unit is reviewing the unsolved murder of an Onion Lake woman which dates back to June, 2007.

The body of 48-year-old Jeanette Chief was found by a fisherman in a small body of water north of Lloydminster.

Chief had last been seen leaving a bar in the city three days earlier, but no suspect was ever arrested.

Cst. Tyler Hadland says advances in forensic science have brought new evidence.

Hadland notes there has to be a certain quantity of DNA present for forensics specialists to analyze — and recent technological improvements have lowered that threshold.

As a result, he says evidence that was gathered at the scene at the time that previously couldn’t be analyzed, is now able to be analyzed.

Hadland also says a number of local leads were followed up and later eliminated — including the possibility that certain vehicles were involved in this incident.

Anyone with information on Chief’s death is asked to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
