Individual rights could be an issue as the Cowessess First Nation formulates a drug policy, according to Chief Grady Lerat.

The band has been considering various ways to get rid of drugs on the reserve.

Lerat says random drug testing has been suggested.

He says the policy is being checked out by lawyers for the band to ensure it doesn’t infringe on individual rights.

Lerat says the band has been looking at establishing a drug policy for about 13 years.

He says a recent incident on the reserve in which a man crashed his truck and shot at a house caused the band to renew its efforts.

The goal is to implement the new policy by January 3rd.
