A 39-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder in relation to the 1992 death of Ernest Taypotat in Saskatoon.

Taypotat was 26 years old when he was found dead in the 400 block of Avenue T South in the early morning hours of August 28th, 1992.

Police say he died as a result of being stabbed.

A Saskatoon man was originally charged in relation to the murder, but that charge was stayed in February 1993 as a result of DNA evidence.

However, police say new evidence came to light that resulted in this new charge being laid.

The suspect, who was 19 years of age at the time of the murder, was removed from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary near Prince Albert yesterday and questioned by investigators.

He was then transported to Saskatoon, where he is making a court appearance on the charge today.

Police say the investigation into Taypotat’s death is one of the many historical unsolved homicides cases that have been subject to a recent review.
