A major festival for Aboriginal writers is taking place this week.

Starting tomorrow, 20th Street in Saskatoon will be the setting for a number of workshops and readings involving such distinguished authors as Maria Campbell, Tomson Highway, Louise Halfe and Marcel Petit.

Lisa Wilson is one of the organizers of the event — as well as being a writer herself.

She says the Anskohk Writers Festival is a prime opportunity for the general public to learn more about Indigenous writing.

“There are a number of objectives for the event. Of course it is to expose the general population to Aboriginal literature and the richness and diversity that is in the literary arts that Aboriginal people are in and are creating.”

In addition to that, Wilson says Aboriginal writers will be examining some tough issues.

One is whether or not they should start up a grassroots collective that would advocate for Aboriginal authors in Saskatchewan and their writing.
