SIGA Board Vice-Chair Says Changes Unnecessary

The Vice-Chair of the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority board of directors says he sees no reason to change how the board works or the renumeration its members receive.

In an interview, Edward Henderson, who is Chief of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation, says SIGA board renumeration is standard when compared to Saskatchewan corporations, and he says it is approved by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

Last week, media reports indicated that SIGA board members, most of whom are chiefs, claim hundreds of dollars in per diem for meetings and some have received more than $100,000 in one year for sitting on the board.

He doesn’t think any further review, besides the annual review that already happens, is necessary.

He also notes that the board has won awards for its governance.

Henderson doesn’t believe the issue of possibly changing how the board conducts its business or is paid will come up at next month’s legislative assembly, because he says the chiefs already know about those, as they were contained in the annual report.

The board meets for its regular meeting on September 29th, where Henderson hopes the conflict of issue items around current board Chair Kirk Goodtrack are resolved.

Henderson says the board only learned through the media that Goodtrack wanted to make changes to board expenses;

he says that was never raised at a board meeting.
