Researchers from the University of Saskatchewan are working to find out if parasites are becoming a health issue in northern communities.

The project started in 2008 when a young child required surgery to remove a brain cyst which usually originates in wild game.

Veterinary Professor Dr Emily Jenkins says prevention includes identifying the source of the parasite.

Jenkins says testing has now taken place in seven communities, with the most recent being in La Loche this summer.
