A conference that examined the impact of mines on people and communities wrapped up yesterday in Prince Albert.

Around 80 people attended the Western Mining Action Network’s bi-annual conference.

Barney Bush was one of the delegates who travelled up from Oklahoma for the meeting.

A member of the Shawnee Nation, Bush says he’s tired of watching companies in his traditional land leave major impacts on the wilderness through activities such as mountain-top removal.

He encourages Indigenous people to stand up if they feel development companies aren’t living up to their obligations to take care of the land.

Bush says the latest activity that worries him is the drilling of shale rock to release natural gas.
