A spokesman for northern commercial fishers says they are still on track to start marketing their own fish next spring.

Brian MacDonald is the president of Saskatchewan Co-operative Fisheries Ltd.

He says the group is pleased by a recent meeting with an American businessman.

Mike Schafer, who owns Schafer Fisheries, recently toured the province’s north and expressed an interest in buying product from the fishers next year.

MacDonald says Schafer offered them an impressive price list, and even said he could take under-utilized species.

MacDonald adds the fishers continue to forge ahead with plans to establish a processing plant in Prince Albert and will do whatever it takes to get things going.

On April 1st, Saskatchewan commercial fishers are scheduled to get out from under the sales monopoly of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation.
