The last time an Onion Lake woman talked to her mom, the conversation was an angry one, a murder trial in Battleford heard this morning.

The next day, October 2nd, 2005, the body of 20-year-old Jarita Naistus was found in a Lloydminster motel room.

Forty-six-year-old Alberta trucker Gordon Dwight Hurley is charged with second-degree murder in the case.

Hurley was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life in prison in 2007, but that conviction was overturned, resulting in this trial.

Naistus’ mother, Connie Dillon, took the stand this morning.

She said the last time she saw her daughter was around midnight September 30th as they celebrated a birthday, and testified the last time she spoke to Naistus was at about 11:30 a.m. October 1st, when she phoned her.

Dillon told Naistus she should come home, while Naistus was upset for not being allowed to stay out later.

The trial continues. So far the jury has heard about 14 of 30 witnesses.
