SaskPower Works to Minimize Impact of New Line

A vice-president with SaskPower says efforts are being made to minimize the impact of a new transmission line going up in the north.

Mike Marsh says the company hopes to establish the 230 kilovolt line by the end of 2014.

It will run from the Island Falls Dam to the Key Lake area boosting power to several mines and communities.

He adds that while no actual construction has been done yet, they are preparing to clear brush for the project.

Marsh notes there is already an old power line established on that same route, so they’ll simply follow it to minimize the impacts on the wilderness.

The new line will not tie into the Prince Albert to La Ronge power line.

Marsh stresses there are several environmental hurdles for the company to jump through before construction begins on the line.

He adds SaskPower will hold open houses with northern communities in 2012 to discuss impacts from the project.
