A University of Saskatchewan researcher has been awarded funding to examine how international law is applied to the inherent rights of Aboriginal people.

Dwight Newman says his research will focus on duty-to-consult, in the wake of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

He says studying what other countries are doing in terms of duty to consult legislation and court decisions will have an impact on legislation here in Saskatchewan and Canada.

He hopes his research will inform the courts and governments of their obligations around the duty to consult.
