Repeal of Sect 67 Could Impact Indian Act: FSIN

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations believes on-reserve First Nations being able to file human rights complaints may impact the Indian Act.

As of June 19th, the Canadian Human Rights Act will apply to First Nations living and working on-reserve.

Vice-Chief Morley Watson says a forum will be held to discuss possible implications this could have on the Indian Act, which he says is outdated and needs modernising.

He believes some provisions may be challenged, such as sections dealing with Indian status and band membership.

Watson says repealing Section 67 could end up being the start of the elimination of the Indian Act but says that needs to be explored.

Monday’s forum will host First Nations leaders, as well as representatives from the Canadian Human Rights Commission and Indian and Northern Affairs.
