The province says it’s willing to work with northern communities on the topic of voter ID’s.
Yesterday at the northern roundtable, several mayors voiced concern about new voter ID requirements in elections.
Many said several of their residents didn’t have things like driver’s licenses or other traditional forms and were being turned away in recent votes.
La Loche mayor Georgina Jolibois says there seems to be different rules for federal, provincial and municipal campaigns.
On top of that, she says the new rules are turning off younger people from heading out to the ballot box.
Meantime, the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Daryl Hickie, says the government is ready to work with communities.
He notes SGI plans to travel to smaller northern communities to hold photo ID sessions in the future.
