More Northern Men than Women

It seems Northern Saskatchewan is a little different than its neighbours when it comes to gender.

According to the Conference Board of Canada much of Northern Canada is male.

For instance, the area around Fort McMurray is 53.6 percent male.

While the area around the Rocky Mountains is almost the same at 53.2 percent male.

Northern Saskatchewan does contain more males than females but that number is significantly less.

The conference board’s Derek Heinz puts it between 51 to 52 percent.

He says the lure of jobs in Alberta’s oilsands could be a key reason why.

Heinz adds more boys than girls are born in Canada each year so this may also explain the numbers.
