A Metis leader north of Prince Albert says he wants the government to create legislation barring the storage of nuclear waste in Saskatchewan.

Bryan Lee of Metis Local 108 says he understands some communities want the project to create economic development for their areas.

However, he says the government should give these regions a chunk of resource revenue instead.

Lee says he isn’t against mining in the north, and believes northerners are entitled to profits from it.

However, he argues one accident from a truck carrying spent fuel would be disastrous for the entire province.

Lee adds the duty to consult process must be followed closely in this case.

He says that goes beyond the province simply accepting money from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.
