The chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is due to be sentenced next month for impaired driving and leading police on a short chase.
Saskatoon Police confirm the charges stem from an incident on September 3rd, 2009 when officers tried to stop a vehicle in the downtown area.
Spokeswoman Alyson Edwards says the officers eventually had to pursue the vehicle over the University Bridge before it pulled over on College Drive.
In addition to the impaired driving charge, Saskatoon Provincial Court confirms Guy Lonechild also faces a count of operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer.
He is due to be sentenced on March 23rd in Rosthern.
Lonechild has issued a statement apologizing for the situation.
He says he was returning from a game of golf and drink with friends when he was pulled over.
The chief says he has always accepted full and personal responsibility.
He adds it is a private circumstance and in no way connected with his work at the FSIN.
Meantime, his lawyer, Darren Winegarden, confirms Lonechild has pleaded guilty to the impaired driving charge.
However, he stresses his client did not plead guilty to the other count of evading police and it remains to be seen what will happen to that charge.
