Saskatchewan uranium giant, Cameco, is working on a plan to clean up a uranium spill on a cargo ship that was headed for China.
The ship, which had left shortly before Christmas, returned to British Columbia following severe weather and the crew noticing some drums with uranium concentrate had spilled.
Cameco spokesperson Rob Gereghty says the company is developing a remediation plan to present as soon as possible to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Transport Canada.
He says all product that spilled will be put into drums and sealed before being shipped back to Key Lake to go through the milling process again.
The spill never left the cargo ship.
Gereghty says the crew is safe and the environment protected.
The cargo ship is currently anchored at Ladysmith, B.C. until a location is picked where the cargo can be cleaned up and repackaged.
