The Waterhen Lake First Nation has a new chief and a mostly new council.

According to unofficial results, Carol Bernard is the newly elected chief of the band.

She beat out six other candidates in yesterday’s election.

Incumbent Richard Fiddler didn’t run.

Forty-three people ran for council.

Two incumbents retained their seats: Fred Fiddler and Jean Laliberte.

Newcomers to council include Brenda Fiddler, Ernie Fiddler, Dennis Martell and Ableheza Ernest.

Meantime, voters in Witchekan Lake have re-elected Chief Steven Jim.

This will be Jim’s third term.

He defeated challengers Brett Fineday and John Thomas in yesterday’s band election.

Three of the four councillors elected are new to council — Bob Cameron, Roger Tipewan, and Derek Little Pine.

Alvin Fineday is the only incumbent returning as a councillor.

The chief and council will serve a two-year term.
