Money is available to communities wishing to commemorate Indian residential school survivors.

Today the Truth and Reconciliation Commission announced dollars available for commemoration projects.

Commission Chair Justice Murray Sinclair says $10 million is available in this coming fiscal year.

Proposals could involve the creation of or improvements to existing permanent memorials or commemorative structures, ceremonies or other projects.

Applications for commemoration proposals will be accepted until March 18th of this year.

The TRC will evaluate them before making its recommendations to the federal government.

Funding will be distributed in April of this year.

The commission also announced it will begin its northern tour mid-March.

It will visit 19 northern communities spanning Nunavik, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
