The Conference Board of Canada says northern Saskatchewan has the youngest population in the country.

The board’s Centre for the North compiled its latest report using data from the 2006 census.

It says 34% of the population in northern Saskatchewan is under the age of 15.

Nunavut and northern Manitoba are also at 34%.

Centre for the North director Derrick Hynes says the situation in the north is a direct result of high birth rates and shorter life expectancies in the Aboriginal population.

Hynes also says the large number of young people will affect government policies in the areas of education, health care, recreation and employment.
