The chief of the Muskowekwan First Nation says an upcoming referendum on mineral rights will be postponed until after the band’s election.

In a press release, Chief Reg Bellerose says it’s essential that any decisions on the file be based on factual information.

The band recently entered into an agreement with Encanto Resources to develop potash on the reserve.

However, earlier this month, some band members complained they didn’t know enough about the deal.

Bellerose says it isn’t feasible to distribute the entire agreement to over 1,100 members, and there is also the issue of confidentiality.

However, he encourages members to come and have a look at the deal for themselves.

The Muskowekwan band goes to the polls on February 28th.
