Creighton Studying Nuclear Waste Storage Potential

The Town of Creighton is exploring the idea of one day being the site of a nuclear waste storage facility — but the town’s mayor says they’re only information-gathering at this point.

Bruce Fidler was part of a delegation that travelled to Ontario recently to meet with officials from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.

Unlike Pinehouse and English River, Creighton has not formally applied to be included in the selection process.

Fidler says the public has to be consulted before anything like that happens.

He also says he hasn’t had any discussions about this with neighbouring Flin Flon, but plans to meet with leaders there soon.

Fidler adds the potential economic benefits for the area are exceptional, and the region seems to have the type of geological features the NWMO is looking for.
