Committee Hears Aboriginal Women’s Concerns

The root causes behind violence against Aboriginal women were discussed in Prince Albert yesterday.

Community groups in the city shared their insights with the Standing Committee on the Status of Women.

Poverty, lack of shelter space and too few programs on reserve were held up as just a few reasons behind the problem.

Angie Bear is an outreach worker in the city.

She says programming is needed to help women who find themselves in dangerous situations; however, she says it should be constructive programs that give women a chance to feel good about themselves.

The committee will take the recommendations back to Ottawa and make recommendations to government.
