Suspect’s Dene Accent Raised During Trial

A Prince Albert courtroom has heard a Stony Rapids man was muttering the words “he hit me, he hit me” in the minutes after a fatal crash in La Ronge.

Const. Brian Moorhead testified in court he was the member who formally arrested Wilbert Mercredi after a car and truck collided two years ago.

The accident claimed the life of 57-year-old Larry Urquhart and resulted in charges of impaired driving against Mercredi.

Moorhead said he smelled alcohol on Mercredi’s breath and that he was slurring his words.

The defence asked Moorhead if Mercredi’s Dene accent could be the reason he failed to understand him clearly, but Moorhead denied the suggestion.

The trial continues tomorrow.
