A new healthy eating program is being introduced at Northern and NorthMart stores across the country.

The goal of the “Paint Your Plate with Colour” signs is to encourage customers to make healthy choices when buying groceries.

Suzanne Hajto is a dietician with the company and says the program started with a survey done in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.

Hajto asked the local people what they wanted in stores the most — and they responded by saying they wanted signs that showed them healthier foods.

She says she really wanted the signs to be colourful and have lots of pictures in order to overcome any language barrier.

Hajto says it’s hoped the program can help battle obesity, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.
