A woman convinced of assaulting a Saskatoon police officer has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Leanne Severight was shot by police on December 27th, 2007 when she threatened them with knives.

A Court of Queen’s Bench justice today gave her 24 months in prison — saying, while her life circumstances were tragic, she was not the victim in the incident and her actions needed to be denounced.

Crown Prosecutor Cory Bliss says it is clear that Severight has issues and a sad childhood that saw her in seven foster homes over a period of two years and was plagued by alcohol abuse and violence.

Severight’s lawyer had been asking for a much shorter sentence with more of an emphasis on probation — because he says if his client is medicated and managed, she can function as a productive member of society.

It’s not known yet if he will appeal.
