The board of the Mamawetan Churchill River Regional Health Authority has honoured representatives of the Pinehouse Interagency Group.

Phyllis Smith is the health region’s Community Health Manager in Pinehouse.

At a recent health board meeting, appreciation was extended to Smith for 15 years of service in the community.

Smith says there have been many accomplishments in Pinehouse.

She notes CBC-TV’s “The Fifth Estate” did a documentary about the northern village 35 years ago that chronicled the community’s problems with alcohol abuse.

However, today, she says a person could find about 250 local people who have been sober for at least two decades.

Smith says the biggest health issues facing the community now are diabetes and the need for better nutrition.

For that reason, she says local agencies have undertaken a special effort on diabetes awareness, and living with the disease.
