A researcher with the Conference Board of Canada says a lack of affordability is a big reason why so many homes in northern Saskatchewan are in need of major repair.

The agency has released a report indicating 38% of the homes in the province’s north are in need of fixing up, compared to just 10% in the rest of the province.

The rate in Saskatchewan’s north is the worst of any region in Canada.

Gilles Rheaume says attracting skilled tradespeople is one way the problem could be alleviated.

Rheaume says the cost of building materials in the north is another problem facing many homeowners.
