A new study has quantified how much of a problem run-down housing is in northern Saskatchewan.

The Conference Board of Canada says 38% of homes in northern Saskatchewan are in dire need of repairs — the worst rate in the entire nation.

The next-worse percentage is found in northern Manitoba, where 28% of houses need major repair work.

In comparison, the conference board says only 10% of homes in southern Saskatchewan need significant repairs.

The study is based on data collected in the 2006 census.

According to Statistics Canada, major repairs are defined as the repair of defective plumbing or electrical wiring, as well as structural repairs to walls, floors or ceilings.
