A northern Saskatchewan organization usually associated with labour issues is speaking out against drug and alcohol abuse.

The Northern Labour Market Committee has unanimously approved a resolution to denounce activities promoting a negative lifestyle.

Committee member Joe Daigneault says he raised the issue after a suicide in his home community of Beauval.

Daigneault says “we need to start making a stand . . . not to condone the type of behaviours that are happening in the communities”.

He says there are those who will say “this is not really your area”, but he says its hoped committee members will now take part in activities which discourage drug and alcohol abuse.

Daigneault says a discussion will be held at the committee’s next meeting to assess steps taken to support the resolution.
