Leaders from across the province’s north assembled in Prince Albert this morning to begin talking about justice issues facing northern residents.

Everything from new drug strategies to interpersonal violence and youth crime are expected to be touched on over the next three days.

Judge Gerald Morin is the keynote speaker at the event.

Morin says many social problems have been criminalized over the years, and some people feel hiring more police will solve the situation.

Morin says it is up to the communities themselves to step forward and address many of the problems.

The judge also advises young people to learn how to say “no” to friends and avoid trouble early on in life.

Conference delegates are also getting an update on the establishment of new police boards in the north, as well as an RCMP briefing about drug issues.
