A critic of the so-called “siege” of 1885 says he and Parks Canada have made a deal not to use the word.

Tyrone Tootoosis says the word “siege” will no longer be used to describe an event in 1885 when settlers rushed into Fort Battleford.

They ran into the Fort when they heard Chief Poundmaker was on his way to Battleford to meet with the Indian Agent.

Tootoosis says Parks Canada and Fort Battleford officials have agreed to make changes when they re-enact that event each summer.

He says they will also include First Nations oral history of those days, along with other written accounts.

Tootoosis says he struck that deal with Parks Canada and Fort Battleford officials during a meeting yesterday.

Representives for Parks Canada and Fort Battleford have not been immediately available for comment.
