A Stony Rapids man has been found guilty of impaired driving causing death.
Yesterday, a 12-member jury in Prince Albert determined Wilbert Mercredi caused the accident which claimed the life of Larry Urquhart two years ago in La Ronge.
Family members wept as the verdict was delivered in Court of Queen’s Bench.
Crown Prosecutor Rob MacKenzie explains Mercredi was convicted on three seperate charges, but will be sentenced on just two of them.
“Guilty verdicts were rendered on three charges: impaired driving causing death, driving over zero eight or over eighty causing death and dangerous driving causing death. The count of driving over eighty causing death was stayed by the court, that’s required by the law . . . and convictions entered on the other two counts.”
Meantime defence lawyer Pab Chetty says he’s surprised and disappointed by the decision.
He says Mercredi will be doing some jail time but he hopes it’s only one or two years.
“I’m hoping that Mr. Wilbert Mercredi would either do one year or two years less one day in the provincial correctional centre.”
In the meantime, a pre-sentence report will be drawn up.
Mercredi will be sentenced on November 26th.
