The provincial government has announced new funding for a northern studies program at the University of Saskatchewan.

There are currently just six students enrolled in the Masters in Northern Governance and Development program.

However, the director of the initiative says that will change now that they’ve been given $250,000 by the province.

Greg Poelzer explains the program teaches economic development and strategic planning at the local level.

He adds it is perfect for students wishing to become northern administrators, and it is also something they can take in their home communities through webcasts.

Poelzer anticipates 15 students will be signed up when the program gets into full swing next year.
