A coroner’s inquest into the RCMP shooting death of a man from the Clearwater River Dene Nation will be held next week in Meadow Lake.

Thirty-eight-year-old Harry Haineault was shot by police on September 2nd, 2008.

The RCMP have said officers went to a house on the reserve with an arrest warrant, and that’s when Haineault fled.

The force says he was eventually caught by one of the pursuing officers, but a physical altercation ensued between the officer and Haineault — eventually prompting the Mountie to shoot him.

First Nations leaders have questioned why the RCMP used lethal force in this case.

The five-day inquest will begin Monday morning at the Meadow Lake Alliance Church.
