AREVA is kicking off a series of open houses in northern Saskatchewan today to discuss a new transportation route that has generated some controversy.

A proposed plan would see high grade uranium ore hauled from McArthur River, and past communities like Pinehouse and La Ronge, to McClean Lake.

Northern Saskatchewan’s Environmental Quality Committee is not in favour of the plan.

La Ronge Mayor Thomas Sierzycki says he has concerns, but doesn’t believe the plan is a threat to the community.

Sierzycki says dangerous goods have been safely transported through La Ronge for several years.

He says he has full confidence this plan can be executed safely, allowing for communities like his to benefit from the economic spinoffs.

Today’s open houses are taking place in La Ronge and Air Ronge.
