A meeting involving First Nations leaders and Nuclear Waste Management Organization officials is taking place today and tomorrow near Waskesiu.

The gathering is described as an educational session. It was organized at the request of the FSIN’s lands and resources commission.

The topic is long-term management of spent nuclear fuel.

A number of communities in northern Saskatchewan have expressed interest in hosting a nuclear waste storage facility.

The English River First Nation has requested an initial screening, the first step in the site selection process — as has the Metis community of Pinehouse.

At issue is finding a proper location for a long-term underground storage facility.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization says each interested community will have to meet a number of technical, geological and environmental standards.

The NWMO says a facility would provide hundreds of technical jobs for many decades.
