The Green Party candidate in a provincial by-election says if she is elected, her first order of business will be putting forward a private member’s bill to ban importing nuclear waste.

Larissa Shasko, the province’s Green Party leader, is running in Monday’s by-election in the constituency of Saskatoon-Northwest.

She says in consultations last year, people resoundingly said they did not want nuclear waste stored here

but she says the provincial government seems to be pushing the nuclear agenda anyway.

Shasko points to industry talks with the northern communities of Pinehouse and Patuanak, which she calls one-sided industry promotions.

Shasko doesn’t see the nuclear issue as divisive because she believes people are against developing it.
