Band Takes Bad Water Issue Into Its Own Hands

Officials at the Moosomin First Nation aren’t waiting any longer for Ottawa to solve problems with their water.

Band councillor Elliot Kahpeaysewat says the band has hired a Saskatoon company to install new in-home filtration systems in each of the band’s approximately 220 houses.

Work on the project is expected to begin in the next few weeks and be completed by February, except for some homes that have arsenic.

Kahpeaysewat says those homes will need different filtration systems.

Kahpeaysewat says the filter systems are long overdue and the water is “terrible”, with some homes getting feces in their tap water.

Indian Affairs has launched a study into the problem.

INAC spokesman Rod Desnomie says their findings indicate the water meets Canadian guidelines for water safety.

Desnomie says a final report is expected by December 31st.
