Water Situation At Yellow Quill Slowly Improving

The chief of the Yellow Quill First Nation says everyone on the reserve now has running water.

Larry Cachene says he is also hopeful a new water treatment plant could be in place by the fall.

It has been just over a week since a fire gutted the reserve’s plant, prompting it to begin trucking in water.

That water is currently being housed in a reservoir tank until a new facility is built.

Cachene hopes to enter the design process in the near future, noting there were some technical issues with the old system — including the rate that it was producing water.

The chief has also enlisted the support of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.

According to Cachene, the FSIN will ask for Yellow Quill to be put on the priority list for federal funding.

The chief says the band is also looking at whether or not to set up a reverse-osmosis plant on the reserve.

But he says it’s unclear how the high iron content in the local water may affect it.

Cachene adds there is still no clear explanation for what caused the fire.

The early suspicion is that it was due to electrical failure.
