NDP Leader Dwain Lingenfelter says the lack of a long-term care facility in La Ronge is just one reason why he is giving the Wall government a failing grade on rural and northern health care.

Lingenfelter the government broke its promise to fund 13 long-term care facilities in rural Saskatchewan when it withdrew the funding in November to deal with the province’s finances.

The Opposition leader says there is also a need for more local care in La Ronge.

Health Minister Don McMorris says Lingenfelter is wrong to say the government has broken its promise, because work on the 13 previously-announced long term care projects is still going ahead.

McMorris says the funds will be there when the projects are ready for construction.

He adds he is aware of the desire for a long-term care facility in La Ronge after meeting with local health officials — but can’t say when that might happen.

McMorris says his government wants to finish the long-term care projects it has already identified before moving on to a new set.

Lingenfelter says if he is elected premier in the next election, the La Ronge long-term care project would be one of his highest priorities.
