Three people have been named to the provincial government’s upcoming review panel on child welfare in the province.
Last year, the government announced plans to review all aspects of child welfare including foster homes, adoption, child protection, and the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
The three appointees include Howard Cameron of the Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation, April Durocher of Ile-a-la-Crosse, and former Conservative MP Carol Skelton.
Bob Pringle, a Saskatoon MLA who is chairing the process, says consultations with key stakeholder groups will begin in the spring.
“We’ll be hearing from people far and wide across the province — north, south, urban, rural. But with regards to these stakeholders, we want them to help define who we should perhaps see. For example, there’s a group of Aboriginal grandmothers in Saskatoon. I want to see those grandmothers,” Pringle says.
He adds that the panel will also be taking information from groups through e-mail and video-conferencing.
The panel will provide non-binding recommendations to the government in the fall.
